From nature to possibilities

What are zeolites?

Zeolites are groups of volcanic minerals with a microporous structure. Their internal cavities can be occupied by various elements with considerable freedom of movement. They can therefore adsorb and release ions, water molecules and much more, making them an extremely versatile solution.

A stone that boils?

This was the impression that caught the attention of Swedish mineralogist Axel Fredrik Cronstedt in 1756. When heating a zeolite, he observed the release of water vapor, as though the stone were boiling. This gave rise to its name: from the Greek zein (to boil) and lithos (stone).

Interestingly, a similar effect can be observed without heating the mineral: when a dry zeolite is immersed in water, small bubbles may appear. This happens because water enters its porous structure and displaces the air in these spaces, which escapes and gives the impression that the stone is boiling.

What are zeolites used for?

Their pores and channels allow them to retain water and other molecules and exchange ions, such as ammonium. These properties make zeolites versatile, with applications in water and effluent treatment, animal nutrition, agriculture and industrial processes.

Not every zeolite delivers the same result

There are various types of zeolites, with different structures and compositions. Their origin and formation conditions directly influence their purity and the presence of natural impurities — characteristics that can compromise efficiency and safety of use.

That is why being a zeolite is not enough: its properties must be understood and its suitability for each application assessed.

ZeoGroup specializes in this knowledge. We study this diversity to develop specific products and solutions, with technical criteria that guide the selection and use of each zeolite.
